Project / Benga Water Supply

Benga is located is located in Ward 2, Nebilye District, the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). The estimated population of the Benga area is 2,500 people. Current water sources are rainwater tanks small springs and polluted rivers. The project team has identified reliable safe spring souces and developed pipeline and tank systems which will serve the three localities, as follows: Pipe 1 - Benga Spring Source serving the villages of Kumba, Kumai, Midipu, Tagpa, Mindip and Lower Nebilye. There is a Trade Store and High School located at Lower Nebilye . \ Pipe 2 - Kuguku Spring Source serving the village of Maipa and adjacent area. Pipe 3 - Kundulkung Spring Source - serving the Kailge area including the market and New Convent. There is also a church, Health Clinic and a Primary School at Kailge. A village questionnaire was completed by Osivo Ombuano, of Goroka RC on 23 March 2018, for the potential water supply project for the Benga area , which confirmed the need for the proposed project. The spring sources have flows in excess of the water supply requirements have been confirmed based upon flow measurements taken by Osivo Ombuano. An MOU has been signed by the spring owner and community members agreeing to share the water supply with the recipient communities. This MOU will become the basis of the legal agreement for the Benga Water Supply Committee to manage the proposed Water Supply Scheme sustainability into the future, post the construction phase. Basic hand washing facilities and latrine style toilets exist within the Benga area. The WASH training will be delivered to the entire population (adults and children) in the early phase of this project. The training program will be delivered over a ten- day period and, where required, hand-washing facilities and toileting facilities will be upgraded. Training venues include the local schools. In summary, this water supply project includes: * delivery of WASH training to the entire population * upgrade of WASH facilities * minimising water borne diseases, * eliminating the need for women and children spending time to fetch water (this will allow children more time to obtain a basic education and women to allocate time to other practices); * improvement of community health * improvement of the local economy with a sustainable water supply. The beneficiaries of the water project are the villagers in Wards 2, the Lower Nebilye High School, the Kailge Primary School, Kailge Health Clinic and a number of Churches and the Kailge Market. Out of these communities a strong and vibrant Water Supply Committee has been selected to run the management and sustainability program for the water supply.
